Let’s face it. The reality is sometimes too heavy, and all of us need an escape from all those daily duties and concerns at least for a moment. That maybe you, too, desire to escape to a world where you can fly a dragon, or slay one, or search for mythical treasures in mysterious temples, or perhaps just wander in a dreamy landscape.

The beauty of role-playing games, aka RPGs, is that they allow us to accomplish these wonderful pursuits from the comfort of our homes (Hang on! Just need to make sure the door is locked, and kids can’t disturb!). In RPGs, we are free to become heroes or villains we always wanted to be.

The essential ingredients of amazing RPGs

I remember back at the university, when the professor’s tone became unbearably dull, I used to open my laptop, load my favourite game with my blue shaman girl, and set out to explore the world, which at that moment was definitely more fun to be in.

I usually took up quests where I needed to find and collect objects guarded by mythical creatures or monsters whom I had to defeat in hair-raising battles. Completing these quests helped me to level up and transform my poorly dressed female character into a feisty fighter with better wardrobe options, badass weapons, and cool companions.

Yet, playing RPG games is not only about getting into bloody fights and smashing everything around you. Sometimes the appeal is in building meaningful relationships with characters through friendships and alliances and exploring majestic environments.

So, RPGs give us exciting opportunities to identify with the main character and explore the gameworld while completing quests. Every great game features the following attributes:

Story and Setting

A central storyline is fundamental for an RPG . Even playing cards with an Ogre in a tavern has a purpose in a thoroughly designed game. Also, the main story defines the environment: you may find yourself in misty mountains, a dark forest or a sandy desert…

Quests and Explorations

RPGs tend to provide you with a key mission, but during your journey, you are also free to take up side-quests that encourage you to explore new locations and make ground-breaking discoveries. Each side-quest enriches the ultimate quest.

Inventory

Do you remember the annoying backpack you need to carry everywhere with you? Yeah? Good. So, don’t lose it as all your weapons and treasures are in there! Sometimes your backpack might even magically have enough space to fit your mount .

Character Skills and Attributes

Sometimes the character you pick at the beginning is going to determine the entire gameplay for you. On other occasions, you get a basic character that you develop along the way based on the choices you make. Pick wisely!

Graphics and User Interaction

The graphics are what makes the game experience unique and unforgettable. The better the graphics and overall experience, the more you want to come back.
