UX/UI design for the in-game controls and stats implementation — Quest in progress
In the land of Dreams the UX / UI team has embarked on a quest to perfect a rather elusive aspect of games that not every player is even aware of. Everyone knows about the importance of an engaging storyline or unique and well-balanced gameplay mechanics. However, the importance of the User Interface (UI) shouldn’t be underestimated.
We all interact with video games through a variety of screens, such as Inventory, Stats, and Skills, and graphic components such as buttons, health and stamina bars, and symbols, such as currency, together known as the “User Interface” (UI). The ultimate goal of a well designed UI is to be as invisible as possible to deliver the most satisfying experience.
Our UI designer is currently on a sub-quest to create and fine-tune the in-game inventory system. The first objective has been to conduct research to see how other mobile games handle the inventory system because the design most players are used to will be the most intuitive for them.
The second objective is to go through a series of iterations to establish a smooth flow between all the screens associated with the inventory system.
- What happens when an item is first added to the inventory?
- What happens if the player wants to equip an item or use an object for an in-game mechanic, such as crafting?
- What happens if the player wants to upgrade an item?
Once all these questions are answered, an inventory system that is easy to use emerges. However, not all is done yet.
There are two types of UI: diegetic and non-diegetic. Diegetic UI components are those that blend with the game world in an immersive way. The playable characters are aware of diegetic UI components and interact with them. Non-diegetic UI components that the playable characters aren’t aware of are more suitable for mobile games. Still, they need to be designed in a way that aligns with the game’s artistic direction.
Our UI designers work hard to make sure that the design of the inventory system’s screens aligns with and enriches the overall look and feel of the game.
Dear readers, as the future players of our game, you are our “quest givers”, and it is our commitment to deliver you the best UI possible. While this may be an insight into the design process, this certainly isn’t the end. And this is only a small sample of the work the team has been doing.
As the game continues to develop, there will constantly be updates to the game UX/UI to enhance the experience, optimise where buttons, screens and information are displayed, and many new features will be added over time too.
Stay tuned for future updates on our other ongoing quests!
