Jean Barker — From the Dreams Quest Writer’s Room

TL; DR

In the Dreams Quest writer’s room, the spotlight is on Jean Barker, an award-winning director and former journalist who’s soon to direct her first feature film.
Jean Barker is a comic book creator as well as a screenwriter and director. Her speculative-futuristic South African graphic novel ZANA publishes this year, and was nominated for a Dwayne McDuffie Award for diversity in 2016 (Marvel Comics’ Ms. Marvel deservedly won that year).
Jean considers herself a South-African American and hopes to introduce creative forces and truths from her African home to the Dreams Quest creative mix.

The Dreams Quest writer’s room and our executive producers have started to map out lore details that unravel the mysteries of DreamsVerse. The experts in the writer’s room are focused on drawing the lore that will create a new depth of storyline for Dreams Quest. It will set the stage and help unravel the questions and concepts behind the origins and the realms. All this would ultimately lead to the release of the first chapter of our game, Dreams Quest Origins & explain how the DreamsVerse came to be.

As promised to the $DREAMS community, we will be unveiling the mysteries behind the people working in the Dreams Quest writer’s room.

“Greetings fellow Dreamers. My name is Jean Barker. I am one of the writers zooming through the challenging and exciting process of building the world of the game, and its stories and characters.”

When I was six years old, my little brother and I shared a room. One morning he took me aside and asked if I could try telling stories in my head instead of whispering them out loud, because I was keeping him awake past midnight. I’ve always been a compulsive storyteller. Creating new worlds and characters forces me to keep expanding my experience by exploring the experiences of the characters whose lives I inhabit. I’m hugely inspired by the culture and mythologies of my African homeland and its struggles against a painful legacy. My favorite animal is the underdog. I also like cats.

I am currently so obsessed with Dreams Quest that my dreams have become brighter and more vivid, and often wind up as new elements of the worlds I’m collaborating to create.

About Jean Barker

Growing up under apartheid in South Africa, Jean has always explored her boundaries and rejected blind authority. In 2010 — after a decade-long career as a successful journalist columnist in Cape Town — Jean moved to Los Angeles to earn a dual MFA in Screenwriting and Directing. Her sci-fi thesis film starred John Heard of Home Alone fame and won the prestigious Directors Guild of America Jury Award. Declared an “Alien of Extraordinary Ability” and twice awarded an artist’s visa, she kept creating no matter what. Her award-winning Speculative-Futuristic graphic novel ZANA will be released later this year. Jean lives in California and Cape Town South Africa. She’s impatiently waiting — after multiple covid-related delays — to direct a feature film in 2022.
